Five Ways to Protect Your Outdoor Plumbing Fixtures This Winter

While we know how harsh the winter weather can be, it might surprise you the impact it can have on your outdoor plumbing fixtures. Anything that is exposed to the elements can get damaged as the temperature drops, such as outdoor faucets, hoses, and sprinkler systems. Without the proper precautions, these things can freeze, crack, or even burst, resulting in massive household disruption and expensive repairs. That’s why you need to take the necessary steps to ensure your outdoor plumbing fixtures are protected this winter.

      1. Use Faucet Covers

Faucet covers are an easy and affordable way to insulate outdoor faucets. All you need to do is slide the cover over the faucet and tighten it to ensure it fits properly. Since these covers are usually made of things like foam or rubber, they provide extra support against freezing cold temperatures. Most of these covers can be bought in hardware stores and come in different sizes, making it easy to find the perfect one for your needs.

      1. Disconnect and Store Hoses

Rather than leaving your hoses outside this winter, consider disconnecting them and taking them inside. Sometimes, outdoor faucets trap water in both the hose and the faucet. When this happens, it increases the risk of freezing and cracking. When you disconnect them, make sure you also drain the hose and find a warm, dry location to store it.

      1. Drain Outdoor Faucets

Outdoor faucets often hold onto water, which freezes and expands when it gets cold. This can cause cracks in the faucet and connected pipes. Rather than let this situation occur, take the time to turn off the water supply to all your outdoor faucets. Open each faucet to drain out all the remaining water, and leave them open throughout the winter. That way, you protect yourself from an expensive plumbing repair.

      1. Insulate Outdoor Pipes

Exposed pipes are at risk for freezing. Assess the condition of your outdoor pipes, even the ones in your garage or other areas prone to cold temperatures. Make sure you add insulation to the pipes, like sleeves or wraps to cover up any exposed pipe.

      1. Shut Off and Drain Sprinkler Systems

Don’t wait to winterize your irrigation or sprinkler system. There are steps you need to take to ensure your plumbing system is ready for icy cold days. Make sure you shut off the main water supply and check each sprinkler head for any trapped debris or water. Also, consider hiring a professional, who will be able to get rid of any remaining water.
