What Should/Shouldn’t You Do to Keep Your Plumbing in Top Condition?

Owning a home comes with a constant revolving list of responsibilities. At the top of the list you’ll usually find plumbing maintenance and repairs. Between sinks, toilets, showers, and underground sewer lines, it seems there’s always a plumbing issue that needs attention.

At Guaranteed Plumbing and Heating, our team of professionals work overtime to ensure your plumbing runs smoothly. While some issues can’t be avoided, there are several things you can do to keep your plumbing in top condition.

Perform Regular Water Heater Inspection and Maintenance

It’s important to check your water heater every few months for issues like leaks (puddles around the unit), rust, corrosion, and other abnormalities. The water heater should also be flushed annually to rid it of sediment that can build up on the bottom.

      Monitor the Water Pressure

When the water pressure is too high it can put a strain on pipes, drains, and fixtures. This can lead to leaks and breaks in your plumbing system. On the other hand, if the water pressure is too low it can cause problems with proper drainage, which can lead to clogs and corrosion. Using a water pressure gauge to test levels can help ensure that the water pressure stays within proper range.

      Fix Leaks Right Away

Whether it’s a slow drip from the faucet or a small puddle under the sink, leaks in your plumbing should not be ignored. Small leaks are usually a sign that a bigger problem is waiting in the wings. It’s best to repair these minor issues quickly rather than wait until they turn into messy and costly repairs.

Don’t Use Drains as Garbage Disposals

Normal pipes are not built to withstand a constant barrage of food particles, coffee grounds, grease, and other waste. While it may seem like an easy way to get rid of that bacon grease or left-over soup by pouring it down the toilet, it can mean disaster for your plumbing. Not only will pipes become clogged, but it could cause the main sewer line to fail as well. Be sure to use a strainer in all sinks, clean dishes off before washing, and never place anything in the toilet, not even disposable wipes.

      Clean Drains Regularly

Even if you use strainers and avoid debris going down the drain, overtime buildup will occur and cause clogs and even corrosion. You can avoid the mess build up by pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down all drains once a month or so. Follow it with some hot water and your pipes and drains will be in good shape.
